Preferred Blend is an active, award-winning Barbershop Quartet with nearly 150 years of combined Barbershop Quartet experience. Preferred Blend enjoys performing many different types of music -- everything from familiar barbershop oldies, ‘40’s swing tunes, Gospel, to modern and novelty numbers. Our venues include the entire spectrum from ice–cream socials, weddings, Barbershop chapter shows all the way up to large corporate events. Preferred Blend will tailor our performance to meet your entertainment needs. Our costuming ranges from formal to casual depending on the customer requirements. Preferred Blend is ready to add our special type of entertainment to your next event.
Pete Hensley ( Baritone )
Pete started singing barbershop in 1950, while in high school quartet, continuing in graduate school. After graduation, he joined a barbershop chapter and was immediately in a barbershop quartet.
Pete has over 54 years of barbershop experience in the Barbershop Harmony Society. Throughout the years, he has been a member of nine barbershop chapters and has sung in over a dozen different quartets. Recently these include “A Touch Of Class,“ 1998 Far Western District Senior Champions, and the 2007 District Senior Champions, “California Crossroads.“ In 2010 he received the Barbershop Harmony Society's "Bachelor of Harmony" Certificate for his long term service and activities within the Society. Pete also performs with a mixed Christmas music group called “The Westminster Carolers,“ who perform in quartets at Coronado's Hotel Del, and other major locations during December each year. Pete’s other barbershop accomplishments include singing with the Houston Tidelanders with whom he medalled in four International Competitions.
Fred Vera ( Bass )
Fred started singing at the age of 6 with his Brother and his Dad entertaining at the historical Mexican Playhouse , Padua Hills in Claremont , CA.
Fred sang in a madrigal group in Jr. High school then on to the Choir in high school. In high school, he joined with 3 other young men and formed a Doo-Wop and Rhythm and Blues quartet. After graduation, Fred joined the U.S. Navy where he found three other guys and formed a barbershop quartet. This quartet performed on base in Hawaii and also traveled to Midway Island to do shows there.
Fred has always loved barbershop singing but waited until his children were grown before joining the Barbershop Harmony Society. Fred has been in several quartets and barbershop chorus’ and in 2008, won the Far Western District Super Senior Championship, with a quartet called “ Harmony.com “.
Fred is the only original member of “ Preferred Blend “ and really enjoys performing at our various venues . Fred sings bass with the Fullerton Orange Empire Chorus.
Buddy Yarnell ( Tenor )
Buddy started singing with his Dad at age 5 and by the time he was 11, he and his Dad ( Bud ) were singing together in a quartet. Bud and Buddy sang in several barbershop quartets, a hobby they both thoroughly enjoyed. Buddy has sung in over 22 quartets from 18 different barbershop chapters.
In Buddy’s 60 + years of barbershopping, he has won three Gold Medals with International Champion “ Masters Of Harmony “ chorus, was in the Evergreen District Champion Quartet, “ Lions Share “ and won the Far Western District Senior Championship with “ A Touch Of Class “ quartet in 1998 which also placed 5th Internationally. Additionally, Buddy sang with “ California Crossroads “ – 2007 Far Western District Senior Champion quartet.
Buddy is a member of the Fullerton CA chapter .
Steve Hansen ( Lead )
Steve has performed in many large and small musical groups over the years.Beginning as a church choir boy and later as a choral singer at the high school and collegiate level, he also sang with the UCSB Schubertians performing a delightful repertoire of Schubert as well as modern composers for numerous audiences.
After moving to Orange County, he performed with the Pacific Chorale and is really enjoying singing the barbershop style since his recent retirement as a secondary school principal after serving 38 years in education.
Steve enjoys singing barbershop in many venues including competing at the division , district and international levels with his quartet, Preferred Blend, and the Fullerton chorus.
